Possible Causes of Hand & Wrist Pain
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Bound by bones and ligaments, the carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the palm side of your wrist. This tunnel protects a main nerve to your hand and nine tendons that bend your fingers.
De Quervain’s Tendonitis: De Quervain’s tendonitis occurs when the tendons around the base of the thumb are irritated or constricted. This is particularly noticeable when forming a fist, grasping or gripping things, or when turning the wrist.
Dupuytren’s Contracture: Dupuytren’s contracture affects the connective tissue under the skin of your palm. Knots of tissue form under the skin, eventually forming a thick cord that can pull one or more of your fingers into a bent position.
Hand Arthritis: The hand and wrist have multiple small joints that work together to produce motion. Arthritis can occur in multiple areas of the hand and wrist, and can have multiple causes.
Hand Fractures: Fractures of the hand can occur in either the small bones of the fingers (phalanges) or the long bones (metacarpals). They can result from a twisting injury, a fall, a crush injury, or direct contact in sports.
Skier’s Thumb: Skier’s thumb describes an injury of the soft tissue that connects the bones of your thumb together. Skier’s thumb now accounts for a significant number of skiing injuries.
Trigger Finger: Trigger finger and thumb are painful conditions that cause the fingers or thumb to catch or lock in a bent position. The problems often stem from inflammation of tendons that are located within a protective covering called the “tendon sheath.”
Wrist Sprains: A wrist sprain is a common injury for all sorts of athletes. A sprain can stretch the ligaments that connect the wrist and hand bones a little too far. The result is tiny tears or a complete break to the ligament.
Hand Splinting: Splints are typically worn when joint pain occurs. They should be small enough to allow functional use of the hand when they are worn.
Hand Therapy: Hand therapy helps a patient regain maximum use of his or her hand after injury, surgery, or the onset of disease.
